Every Audi runs constant self-checks, and the dashboard is how it talks to you. The colour of a warning light is the fastest way to judge how serious it is, so start there.

WHAT THE COLOURS MEAN

Red means stop. Something needs immediate attention and continuing to drive risks damage or safety. Yellow or amber means a fault has been detected that needs checking soon, but is not usually an emergency. Green and blue are simply telling you a system, such as your lights or cruise control, is active.

RED LIGHTS: ACT NOW

  • Oil pressure (red oil can): Stop as soon as it is safe. Low oil pressure can destroy an engine in minutes.
  • Coolant temperature (red thermometer): The engine is overheating. Pull over and let it cool
  • Braking system (red circle or exclamation mark): Could be low brake fluid or a fault. Do not ignore it.
  • Battery/charging (red battery): The charging system has failed and the car may soon lose power.

AMBER LIGHTS: CHECK SOON

  • Engine management light (EML): The catch-all for engine and emissions faults. The car may feel normal, but it is logging a fault code that should be read.
  • DPF (diesel particulate filter): Common on Audi TDI models. Often means the filter needs a longer run to regenerate, but a persistent light needs investigation.
  • ABS: Your normal brakes still work, but the anti-lock system is offline.
  • Tyre pressure (TPMS): Check and adjust your pressures, then reset the system.
  • Glow plug (coil symbol, diesels): If it flashes, it usually signals an engine fault rather than a simple glow plug issue.

WHY READING THE CODE MATTERS

An amber engine light can point to dozens of different faults, from a loose fuel cap to a failing sensor. The only way to know is to plug in a diagnostic tool and read the stored code. On Audis, generic code readers often miss manufacturer-specific faults, which is why a specialist using the right software finds problems a general garage can miss.

If a light is flashing rather than steady, treat it as more urgent, and if a red light appears, stop and call for help rather than pressing on.

Can I drive with the engine management light on?

If it is steady amber and the car drives normally, you can usually drive carefully to a garage. If it is flashing, or the car is losing power or misfiring, stop and get it recovered.

Why does my Audi warning light keep coming back after being cleared?

Clearing a code does not fix the underlying fault. If the condition is still present, the light returns. The fault needs diagnosing and repairing, not just resetting.

Will a warning light fail my MOT?

Yes. Several warning lights, including the airbag, ABS, brake and engine management lights, are an automatic MOT failure if illuminated.
